Rep. Keith Ellison Statement on Former Nazi Commander Living in Minnesota

WASHINGTON—Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after the Associated Press revealed that Michael Karkoc, an alleged top commander of a Nazi SS-led unit has been living in Minnesota for more than 60 years. Karkoc has been accused of burning villages during WWII and lying to US immigration officials.

“The revelation that a Nazi war criminal has been living in our communities for decades sent chills through my spine, as I’m sure it did to the Minnesotans who woke up to this news. It is beyond alarming that someone who is accused of slaughtering women and children during World War II could be living in our home state.

“I hope the Department of Justice will fully investigate the evidence against Mr. Karkoc to determine if he is eligible for deportation. The Holocaust continues to remind us of the need to be vigilant in seeking justice and holding accountable the perpetrators of war crimes and acts of violence against humanity.”
