Ellison Thanks Secretary of State Clinton for U.S. Recognition of Somalia Print
January 28, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS-Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today applauding last week’s historic decision to approve U.S. recognition of the new Somali government.

The letter comes after more than 20 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, including the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, met with President Hassan Sheikh Moharnud on January 15, 2013

“We… hope that normal diplomatic relations can be restored as soon as possible,” the Members said in the letter. “This moment may be our best opportunity in decades to promote peace, stability and good governance in Somalia, and our own national security interests in the region.”

The full letter can be read here.
