I firmly believe that our nation’s strength lies in our diversity and that America succeeds when we endorse and champion policies of inclusion, rather than those of exclusion. I will continue to fight to bring legislative equality for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Americans.
This means:
- Ending the despicable "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy in our military.
- Expanding hate crimes protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Repealing portions of the Defense of Marriage Act that discriminate against legally married same sex couples.
- Passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would extend prohibitions on workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. I believe that this should fully include transgender Americans as well.
I'm also proud to be a vice-chair of the Congressional Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Caucus.

Today Congressman Keith Ellison joined 76 of his colleagues and urged President Barack Obama to suspend the investigation and discharging of service members in the Armed Forces because of their sexual orientation. Under the misguided and discriminatory law known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” openly gay and lesbian service members and those suspected of “homosexual conduct” may not serve their country in the military.
Keith supports legislation in Congress to rescind this policy, but in the meantime the administration could stop enforcing this discriminatory policy hinders our military’s readiness and undermines our national security.
