On Prime Day, Representative Keith Ellison Ask Jeff Bezos About Amazon’s Sale of White Nationalist Propaganda, Children’s Toys
WASHINGTON - Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) today sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos inquiring about Amazon profiting from the sale of products and content from groups identified as neo-Nazis and white nationalist hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Amazon’s sale of these products was highlighted in a study by the Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) and the Partnership for Working Families, entitled Delivering Hate. Ellison’s letter also highlights Amazon’s history of selling children’s toys, costumes, books, and clothing emblazoned with known symbols of hate.
“Amazon’s practice of hosting the sale of hateful literature, toys, and music spreads and normalizes hate ideologies. Either Amazon finds this practice acceptable or Amazon’s sheer size makes it impossible for the company to police itself. In either event, I am disturbed that such a powerful corporation is materially fueling the rise of hate groups in our country.”
The letter asks Bezos to respond to these questions:
· How much money has Kindle Direct Publishing made from the sale of materials published by SPLC-identified hate groups since 2015?
· How does Amazon enforce its policies against the sale of racist and hateful items?
· Will Amazon destroy any merchandise with hate symbols currently in Amazon-controlled warehouses within the next three months?
