Rep. Ellison Statement on MINER Act
WASHINGTON – Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement on Congressman Tom Emmer’s MINER Act:
“Congressman Emmer’s MINER Act is an attack on one of the most beautiful natural areas in Minnesota and undermines core environmental laws. I am strongly opposed to this bill because we cannot put the fate of the Boundary Waters, one of the most-visited wilderness areas in the country, at risk with a blank check to multinational corporations.
Instead of bowing to the bidding of corporations, Congress should let scientists make on-the-ground mining lease decisions and ensure our constituents are given a chance to weigh in. This bill would do the opposite by all but eliminating the review and public input process for massive mining projects.
The Boundary Waters are the crown jewel of our state. I oppose the MINER Act and its attempt to undercut the accountable management of our public resources, and I will do everything I can to ensure it does not become law.”
