Rep. Ellison Statement on New Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo
WASHINGTON – Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after Medaria Arradondo was unanimously confirmed as Minneapolis Chief of Police:
“I want to congratulate Medaria Arradondo on his confirmation as the new Minneapolis Chief of Police today. I also want to congratulate Mayor Betsy Hodges for her leadership in choosing Chief Arradondo and the City Council for sending a strong message as to the kind of Police Chief we need with their unanimous support. This confirmation makes it clear that Minneapolis is focused on improving strained police and community relations, in addition to ensuring public safety.
“For more than 30 years, Chief Arradono has served his community. First as a patrol officer in the 3rd Precinct, and eventually rising through the ranks to serve as Deputy Chief. He is of the community. Throughout his tenure, he has shown his deep devotion to Minneapolis, an understanding of what our community needs, and a willingness to act. He is the right leader to help shift the culture within the police department and build trust with the community.
“Chief Arradondo is a friend and has been a unifying force across all communities during challenging times for our city. He never shies away from difficult conversations. And most importantly, he always listens.
“That makes him the perfect choice for this role.”
